Not nice...

As we start the new camping season its always good to review some tips on keeping dry. Nothing makes a campout more unbearable than getting your gear all soggy! Although most people camp during the summer months when its warm and dry there are times during the season when you will get rain. But, fear not! Here are some tips to staying dry that I have learned from my 25+ years camping with the Boy Scouts.

TIP #1

Did you use seam sealer on your tent? Remember to seal all tent seams on an annual basis. Purchase some fresh sealer from a sporting goods or camping store. During your first outing in the spring, re-seal all your seams with a liberal amount of sealer.

TIP #2

Are you putting a ground sheet or cloth under your tent when you camp? Its not just enough to put the ground sheet under the tent, youve got to tuck the edges under the tent so when it rains the water will not collect on the ground sheet and run under the tent. :-(

So, if your rain fly is installed correctly, the seam sealer holding and the ground sheet properly tucked under the tent you should be go to go! at least from moisture getting into your tent.

TIP #3

When inside the tent during a rainstorm, make sure your gear, sleeping bags, mattress, etc. are not touching the tent walls. Why? Well, the tent walls and rain fly are designed to deflect the water droplets off the tent and onto the ground. If you upset this design by putting your pack, sleeping bag or other gear against the wall, water will pool and soak through the tent wall!

I learned this the hard way! I was in a small tent and didnt realize that my sleeping bag was resting against the tent wall. During the night it rained and I slept through it. In the morning I had a wet spot at the foot of my sleeping bag and a puddle on the floor of my tent. :-(

TIP #4

When you enter the tent after being out in the rain, take off your wet clothes and put them in a corner or at the front of your tent with your wet shoes. Some tents have a small vestibule that is ideal for this. By using this tip, you will localize all your wet gear and keep the other gear dry.

TIP #5

Bring rain gear or a poncho. Ya, I know that sounds pretty obvious, but youd be surprised at how many campers are ill prepared for rain. You can get a $2 poncho at Target that will keep most of the rain out. I have a lightweight rain suit, top and pants that I found to be a lifesaver a number of times. In a pinch, you can take a large, green garbage bag; cut three holes in it for your head and arms and it will keep you dry too! I know, my son does it all the time. Hes so fashionable! :-)

If you are prepared and follow these Tips you can enjoy even the most inclement of camping days. It can be fun to be inside the tent play a card game or reading a good book while you listen to the pitter, patter of the rain on your tent. Make some hot chocolate, tea or soup and enjoy!

Tim Dales, author of Discover the Secrets of Family Camping Without Breaking the Bank! reveals the tips and techniques that he has learned from over 25 years of camping and hiking as a Boy Scout, camping with his own family and as a Scoutmaster, leading Scouts on campouts. Not nice...

What makes the campfire so special? We all have our own ideas. There are so many great things about campfires and what we can do during the fire. Even starting the fire can be a mystery to some of us who have never had to start one.

Irma and I pulled into a beautiful BC Provincial Park campground one evening. We set up the trailer, cleaned and made the table ready for supper. Started the stove and, while Irma prepared the meal I got busy starting the campfire. I had purchased a box of firewood from the ranger upon entering the park. It was not very dry wood so I had to chop it up in fairly small pieces. I always carried a heavy axe to break the large pieces down to a size suitable for the smaller hatchet.

I set up the fire starting with one piece of newspaper on the bottom. I built a small pyramid of thin kindling over the paper, a larger one over that one and finally a few of the larger pieces over that one. Placing one fire stick on top of the paper near the bottom I lit the fire and presto, we had a campfire burning nicely. You may use either fire sticks or paste. Both will burn like mad for getting the fire started. And it kept burning. After about 8 to 10 minutes the larger wood had begun to burn from the heat generated by the fire stick.

All this was accomplished easily as I had done it many times before. What I didn't realize was that some others may not know how to do it. A young couple next door to us came over and introduced themselves. They were from London, England. They had been trying to start a fire for hours without success. We were happy to help them.

We lived on Vancouver Island for a few years. On our way to our favorite campground we had to pass by a saw mill. The owner had a huge box out by the road and kept it full of slab-wood, mostly cedar. We usually stopped by on our way and picked up a load for the campfire.

Other than the axe and hatchet, we also carried a saw. The best was a small Sweedish bow saw with rip teeth. It's called the Sven, folds away and really works. The saw was handy for cutting up long springy wood. Cedar is springy. Hit it with the axe and the axe may bounce right back at you.

We backpacked into places where there were no campgrounds and you had to find your wood in the woods. A lot of people look for fallen trees as their supply. One thing you can count on is that if the wood is on the ground, it will be wet or at best, damp. What you want is a standing dead tree. Because it's dead, water no longer goes up to the branches via the root system. The tree just stands there, drying out a little more each day until it finally falls down. Cut it down before it falls and you will have great firewood.

There you have it. Dry wood. Proper tools. All the know how you need for that perfect campfire.

Joe and Irma are the owners of http://www.whistler-outdoors.com Their website teaches visitors how to enjoy all of the outdoors activities available in the beautiful Whistler mountain area of British Columbia.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://tents83984.blogspot.com/2008/05/texsport-tent-pole-replacement-kits-38.html' title='Texsport Tent Pole Replacement Kits, 3/8 in. There is a flashback sequence, but they for some reason flash back to Slumber Party Massacre. All these massacre movies are pretty much the same, so I guess they got confused about which movie this was a sequel to. But it doesn't matter, because this movie sure is fun! It doesn't take itself as seriously as the first and that's a good thing. Sometimes it plays it straight, but sometimes it feels like it's starting to border on being a slasher spoof as opposed to a straight slasher film. There is plenty of violence and no less than six women show off their double d's, so fans of 80's slasher flicks should definitely enjoy this.
Customer Review: My Kind of Junk Food
This is one of my all time favorite "stupid slasher movies" ... and I'm not afraid to admit that it's quite simply because I like most of the women who were selected to run around partly and completely naked as the films story unfolds ... or was it ... falls apart. Cute, curvy girls bouncing around in weakly acted horror as their scantily clad bodies are put in evermore rediculous forms of peril ... how could I resist such a mindless offering? It's pure guilty pleasure ... and I've long since gotten over the guilt. :) Those of us who occasionally (or regularly) watch this sort of drivel know it's not about quality cinema ... it's about managing our sexual and personal frustration by indulging in a bit of mindless and gratifying stupidity. It's about letting your "real world" standards go for a few hours and letting your inner monster come out to play for a while. What often disappoints me about movies like this isn't their lack of writing, acting or cinematic quality ... I've come to expect these things. What I don't enjoy are mindless slasher movies with unattractive starlets, sparse nudity and little or no attempt at even lame horror. I mean ... if you're not even going to indulge our guilty pleasures ... what's the point. Well, this movie didn't disappoint ... slippery shower scenes ... bouncing babes with very curvy bodies ... plenty of mindless and stupid and highly unlikely horror ... it was JUST the ticket. Enjoy with a greasy cheese burger, cold pizza, cold fries and a soda ...

There are several important factors that come into play while you decide about buying the perfect hiking gear for your specific needs. You need to consider whether it'll be a short duration hiking trip or a longer, well-organized hiking trip involving sleeping and outdoor eating, already taken care of by the organizers. Your purchase of the hiking gear will greatly depend on such factors and in case the trip is not organized by an external organization, you might have plenty of work on your hand.

To start with the process of identifying all the items that you'll require for the hiking trip, it is important that you get your hiking partner (if any) involved in the planning process. No matter what distance you may be planning to go, if planned wisely and the load divided well, it can be a very smooth experience. It is also important that you keep your baggage as minimum as possible since you'll be hiking along with it.

The primary object that deserves deliberation is the pack itself. You'll find many stores and even a few military surplus stores where you can lay your hands on some inexpensive used hiking gears in excellent condition. An ideal hiking pack will be around four thousand cubic inches, not taking into account any extra baggage such as photography equipments, hunting or fishing equipments etc. Before settling down on your final choice of hiking gear, give considerable thought to its functionality, efficiency and weight as well.

If your hiking trail would involve stopovers at night, you might be required to carry a tent along, unless you fancy sleeping in the open, under star-lit skies. You'll have to determine whether it'll be two people in one tent or two people in two tents. Tents are normally available four to five pounds in weight and are the ideal choice for cold and rainy terrains.

Sleeping bag is the other thing in your hiking gear whose purchase will need some brainstorming. The ideal choice of a sleeping bag is dependent on the climatic conditions of the place that you plan to go on hiking. Generally, sleeping bags are available in weights of two ounces to one pound, packable into a size of a softball. You may either go with a very light weight sleeping bag for warmer climates or some sophisticated variety of cold-resistant sleeping bags that are capable to keep you warm even in minus thirty degree temperatures.

Coming to the eats, it's best to carry ready to eat meals similar to the army that can be easily heated with the help of a small can of Sterno. In case you plan to go fishing, hunting or foraging during your hiking expedition, it is best to carry along hiking specific lightweight utensils for cooking.

Last but not the least, the clothing like your tent and sleeping bags will largely depend on the climatic conditions of the hiking terrain. For summers it is ideal to pack in a lot of socks (since wet socks very often result in blisters), comfortable boots, outerwear and other accessories. For cold conditions, especially the ones involving high altitude, you'll require light nylon shorts, warm gloves, long underwear, fleece jackets, hats, lightweight rainproof layer and other specific accessories for your personal needs.

Other important accessories that can be carried along as well are tools/knives, compass, headlamp, sunscreen, first-aid kit and sunscreen.

Abhishek is a Camping freak! Large enough to sleep four people at once yet compact enough to fit conveniently on a backpack or saddle bags, the tent is great for all types of camping and conditions. The Timer Creek Sport includes such features as a Dutch D-style door for easy entry, along with a shock-corded fiberglass frame with pole pockets that sets up and disassembles quickly. Campers will also appreciate the weather-armor polyester fabric and tough side seams, which are reliably rugged and resist leaks of all kinds. The window and roof vents, meanwhile, do a nice job of ventilating the tent and controlling morning moisture.
Additional details include water-repellent threads, zippers, and webbing; a sonic-sealed floor that's welded (not sewn) to eliminate stitch and needle holes; and a removable fly for wet weather conditions. The Timer Creek Sport measures 9 feet wide by 7 feet long and is backed by a 10-year limited warranty.
  Amazon.com Tent Guide
Selecting a Tent
Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
  Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
  Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive.
  Domes and Tunnels
Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor-plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome.
  Size Matters
Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters.
Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Customer Review: GREAT tent for $25
I've had this tent for just over a year now. It's been used about 20x. It has amazing quality thru-out. Nothing has torn-up with it at all. The floor is still completely sealed and there are no signs of anything wearing. Amazon had it on clearance back in March of 2007 for right at $25. My only regret is that I didn't buy 2 or 3 of them @ that price... GREAT PRODUCT... GREAT QUALITY...
Customer Review: Exactly as expected
This tent was perfect for my price range. I took this camping and it is quite light. It is especially light if you're going to have 3 people sleeping in the tent and I think it is safe to say that 3 people could backpack with this tent (by each carrying a 1/3rd of the tent weight). Four people, although technically do-able without gear, would be quite a tight squeeze. Tent was an easy, standard set-up as far as tents go, and we were able to take it down in the rain in only a few minutes. Definitely a good purchase for the price (only tested in a light drizzle).

Once he became the first person in history to summit Mt. Everest in 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary had but one statement regarding Nepal's grandeur: "Nepal is the only country in the world which is also one of the world's great trekking paradises and one of the nicest countries in the world for trekking." Today, thousands of trekkers and hikers don their extreme-outdoor wear to fulfill a lifelong dream of trekking in Nepal, one of the most widely visited countries for hiking in the world. In a sense, it is also one of the wildest places left on the planet. These "paradises" Hillary so admittedly spoke about can be experienced with a trip along any one of three base camp treks.

The most esteemed trek in Nepal is the Everest Base Camp Trek; the same route used by early climbing pioneers in the 1950s. This hike provides trekkers with various vantage points for viewing Mt. Everest, while allowing them to visit the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, local Buddhist monasteries, and rustic villages. Obtaining a permit to join an Everest trek is only possible by reserving with an in-country tour operator. This not only assures safety, but means that groups will move at a pace that allowing proper acclimation.

After walking through villages and mountain passes, innumerable opportunities to snap photos present themselves. A snail's pace is best, and a pre-mapped route is not as demanding as it is oxygen depleting. Before reaching the base camp, you'll visit the Khumbu Glacier and the southwestern quarter of Everest proper. Being fit for hiking will make the trip more enjoyable and positively everlasting.

The most popular base camp trek in Nepal is conquering the trail to the Annapurna Base Camp. The peak is just less than 9,000 meters, but the comfy camp is right over 4,000 meters. This trek can typically be completed in less than 10 days. If altitude treats you kindly, you'll view the Annapurna Himal, Hiunchuli, Fang, Annapurna, Ganagapurna, Machhapuchhare, along with other peaks. Trekkers along this route will experience great gorges and fertile valleys that epitomize the dichotomy of Nepal's natural landscapes. Day hikes around many of the valleys and peaks are available once you reach your encampment.

The next best trek in Nepal is the Dhaulagiri Base Camp Trek. First climbed in 1960 by a Swiss and Austrian expedition, Dhaulagiri was once considered the highest mountain in the world. Rightfully translated to "White Mountain," the name connotes its omnipotence over the region. Trekking in Dhaulagiri is one of the most challenging expeditions because of the varying mountain passes, namely the French Pass and Thapa Pass, both surpassing the 5,000-meter mark. You'll not only tramp across ice- and glacier-fields, but you'll have to acclimate to the altitude and an untamed topography. With over fifteen 7,000 meter peaks along this trek, you'll be more than pleased you brought along your camera and crampons!

All in all, whether your doing the Everest Base Camp Trek or any other trek, trekking Nepal means that you'll have numerous choices on which routes might suite you best. Those considering some of the tougher routes should definitely be fit for hiking in various altitudes and over multifarious terrain. Finding a quality tour operator is essential - just ask for references of past travelers and read reviews about others' experiences. After you've prepared for your journey, chosen your route, along with the team with which you'll travel, venture to Nepal geared and psyched up for a literal breathtaking adventure.

For more information about Nepal Trekking visit http://www.itreknepal.com

MSR Hubba Hubba HP Tent 2-Person 3-Season One Color, 2-Person

MSR made the Hubba Hubba HP 2-Person 3-Season Tent with a super lightweight fabric that cuts weight down to 3lb 11oz. Plus, this fabric adds durability to the tent, and water-and UV-proof protection to the fly. You might think a tent that light would be quite cramped. On the contrary, the Hubba Hubba HP's hub-and-swivel pole design creates enough room for both people to sit up comfortably near each end of the tent. Two doors eliminate middle-of-the-night crawl-overs. Pitch just the fly and footprint (footprint sold separately) on summer desert trips, and pack the HP's body and fly for wet spring and fall camping.

Product Features

Material: [Fly] 20D x 330T ripstop nylon 66, 1000mm polyurethane & silicone treated; [Floor] 40D x 238T ripstop nylon 6 10000mm polyurethane coated

Freestanding: Yes

Poles: 1 All-in-one hub and swivel

Pole Material: DAC SL 9.8 &9.9mm

Doors: 2

Clip / Sleeve: Clip

Floor Space: 84 x 50in (213 x 127cm), 29sq ft (12.8sq m)

Interior Height: 40in (100cm)

Vestibule Space: 9.5sq ft (0.9sq m)

Packed Size: 20 x 7in (51 x 17cm)

Seam Sealed: Yes

Ventilation: Mesh

Weight: 3lb 11oz (1690g)

Recommended Use: 3-Season backpacking, ultralight backpacking

Manufacturer Warranty: Lifetime

Camping can a ton of fun if you have the right equipment to make it an enjoyable time. Among your supplies, a camping stove should be considered a must - especially if you camp often - because it just makes cooking more convenient and easy for your family and friends. Although most campsites have a fire pit that you can cook on, that approach to your "outdoor cuisine" is difficult for someone who is not familiar cooking over an open flame. Bringing along a camping stove makes meal preparation quicker and more efficient.

A camping stove is not very expensive, and really does add a nice benefit to your camping trip. There are a few tips, however, you should be aware of before buying one. You ought not buy a camping stove at just any store. Rather, make the effort to specifically visit a sporting goods store or a reputable camping dealer who specializes in such items. Staffs that are familiar with camping products are important because they can provide you helpful hints on how to use them and, in the case of a stove, how much food it typically holds.

More specifically they can explain how to assemble the product, or instead do the work for you for a small fee. Depending on the limits of your prior knowledge, that could save you several hours figuring out how to put it together. You should also buy the stove from a merchant that accepts returns in case you find that you do not like the particular camping stove purchased.

The best camping stove option is one that comes complete with two burners. This allows your "chef" to cook one item of food while another person prepares something else. Simply, it is just more convenient and time efficient to cook a full meal with two burners. Once out in the woods, you will not regret the additional cost of the extra burner!

When it comes to fuel, various camping stoves work with different fuels. For an environmentally friendly product, you should consider a stove that uses white gas. It is also the least expensive of all your fuel options. Always use refillable containers so you reuse them repeatedly rather than purchasing a new one for each trip.

Finally, if you plan to camp in a location at an altitude over 10,000 feet, ask whether the stove you are interested in will actually function there. Some models are made specifically for this.

Camping can be very enjoyable if you have the right equipment. A simple, but fully functional outdoor stove should be included as part of your essential gear.

For practical RV and camping readiness information, please visit http://www.rv-camping-preparation.com, a popular site providing great insights concerning issues that help you with camping and buying that RV you've dreamed of.

Groovy Girls Girl Scouts Tent

Plan a pretend camping trip for your Groovy Girls Scout troop! Texsport Double Bivy Tent, Blue / Gray / Chili Pepper Red
Customer Review: Cheap, but adequate.
As I was only going to be out 6 days, and didn't have the money to spend on a true ultralight backpacker's tent, I thought this would suffice. For the most part, it did, though on night 4 I split a pole. Luckily, with some duck tape I managed to get through the trip, but this tent will be promptly replaced by something higher quality. This tent was fine for a short trip and a "one-time-use" type situation. If you are going to be using this tent a lot, I suggest searching for one of higher quality. That said, for a $30 lightweight tent, it sufficed for my 1 week hike.
Customer Review: Great little backpacking tent
I bought two of these for my 11 and 14 yr old kids. It sets up quick and easy. My 14 year old broke the zipper, but that was not the tent's problem. He is just rough and was forcing it really hard instead of asking for help. My daughter can set it up herself and it is lightweight enough for her to carry.

Almost everything is available on the internet these days. You can find any and everything you possibly need, camping furniture is no exception. There are huge number of websites selling camping furniture, which means that there are plenty of choices to choose from.

Lot of things that you may need while camping which also includes camping furniture, are lot more cheap in the internet than in the local retail shops. There is wide variety of choices also in camping furniture. Therefore irrespective of the taste, you will definitely find everything on the internet.

Some people are quite comfortable with just tent and a sleeping bag. These people pack all this in their backpack and are pretty happy with their camping gear. As long as they are with warm and weatherproof clothing, comfortable boots for hiking, these are the only things they need in their camping gear and don't prefer camping furniture.

Some people prefer having full sized trailer, with bathroom and television; they are content and happy with this kind of equipment for camping. Most of the campers fall in-between these two extreme categories. If you camping along with children, you don't need anything more than a tent and a sleeping bag.

When you are not too much worried about a little bit of discomfort that you may face during camping, then you will be traveling lighter than other campers who want a bit more of comfort. You may want to carry some more things like a lantern, air bed in case you want to sleep in a bed, a table which is foldable, few chairs apart from the tent and sleeping bag. This much of camping furniture is sufficient to suit your camping needs. Don't forget to carry lots of matches and fire lighters. You should find out before hand whether you are allowed to light fire for cooking at the camp site.

Some campers love camping outdoors but still want their trip to be as much comfortable as much possible. Having a comfortable camping trip is possible today which might have impossible about twenty years back. I have a queen sized air matress and it pretty much took up the whole tent with about a foot of room on each side. It wasn't windy so I didn't even use the tent stakes, and it didn't rain the night I was camping but it did rain during the day before I set up so the ground was a bit wet. I had no water problems inside the tent. Setup was easy, took about ten minutes by myself. Breaking down was quick and the tent fit easily back in it's case. If I had to buy another one I would get the next size up for a little more room to store your gear.

Camping trailers come in many shapes and sizes with just as many varying prices allowing them to fit within many different budgets. They can serve many different needs but, generally, camping trailers are a mobile "home away from home." Some are a simple motorized home while others have many different features, appliances and comforts of home such as gas supply and sanitary sewer systems, among others.

You can find some camping trailers that have ever luxury and amenity you might desire. The comforts of home could be similar to the comforts of a package holiday on a beach resort, but the cost is going to be quite high. Most of these luxurious models will range from thirty to forty feet long. Some have exterior walls called "slide outs" that can slide out to provide more living space inside the trailer. Or, you could choose a model that is more similar to a van. These versions are referred to as van conversion motor homes. Though these van style ones have some limitations as far as space, they are more reasonably priced and still good for general everyday living.

If you want a compromise between the two models, there is a smaller version of the luxurious thirty to forty feet camping trailers which will likely fit better within your budget. In these models, you will find a bunk over the cab. They typically do not lack the amenities of the larger versions as they usually do not extend longer than thirty feet.

There are still so many different models available in the market today. One model has a folding tent built on a trailer and can be set up quickly. These are a great space saver and very convenient if you want to just park briefly or for the night. Camping trailers still come in a variety of different sizes, with some offering a bedroom with complete cabins inside.

If you choose a larger model, you will probably need to install a towing bar allowing you to pull the fifth wheel trailer which is fairly large and designed for use with pick-ups. These are great alternatives to the traditional trailer because the weight is in the towing vehicle and not on the van.

Before you make the purchase, be sure you find a camping trailer that will meet your camping needs. Do some research and heed to expert advice to make an informed decision and purchase. It will be quite a significant purchase, so you will want to do so with your best judgment.

John Baker is publishing most often for http://www.alicante-spain.com, an internet site with information about map of Costa Blanca north, Costa Blanca airport tips and different areas. And yes, the lights are an oval shape, just as an FYI. If so, then try these tips to increase your enjoyment.

Plan A Route

A Colorado hiking trip begins with plans for where you will be going. When choosing a trail it is important to take into consideration the altitude change and how many miles will be hiked. When looking at the altitude change it is important to realize that the same distance with even a moderate change in altitude will feel much more difficult and take more time than the same distance without much of an altitude change. When determining how many miles to hike, always allow for the slowest person in the party, and err on the side of fewer miles, rather than too many.

Document Your Route

Once you have planned a route for your Colorado hiking trip, make sure you write it down. Include dates and times of estimated departure for the trailhead and estimated times of return. Once you have this information written out you can leave it with a friend or family member so that if there is a problem and you do not return on time they can send help out.

Dress For The Weather

Colorado hiking is known for its wonderful scenery. It is also known for its dramatic changes in weather, especially at higher altitudes. This means that layered clothing is the best option; where if the day starts out warm shorts and a tee shirt can be worn, but if the day cools off quickly a pair of long pants, a jacket, and a fleece hat can be added. Another good idea is to carry along a rain jacket.

Bring Snacks And Drinks

Bringing food is important even if going on a very short hike, and essential if going on a long one. This can be calorie-rich snack foods such as nuts or a candy bar. Even more vital to a safe and enjoyable trip is hydration. This can take the form of water, juice, or sports drinks. Whichever option is chosen make sure that enough is taken so that when thirst kicks in it can be promptly quenched.

Don't Forget To Slow Down And Enjoy

Colorado hiking has much to recommend it, including a great variety of plant and animal life. The best way to enjoy these are to take frequent breaks, look around, and see why the Colorado Rocky Mountains are a favorite escape. Bringing a camera and binoculars are fun ways to enjoy the plentiful nature and scenery that is offered.

Colorado hiking trips are great ways to enjoy the best the state has to offer when it comes to nature and wildlife. Following the above tips can help to make wonderful memories and ultimate enjoyment more likely.

Sarah Holt writes for The Ultralight Backpacking Site. Poke-out vent in side wall allows the option of additional ventilation when needed.
Customer Review: Did a great job on a tough hike
This tent performed very well on my 4 day winter hike on the Bartram Trail. Kept me comfortable through nights of freezing rain and high winds. Floor kept out water even when it built up along the sides of the tent (bad placement of tarp on my part). The vestibules were a great place to store gear out of the rain. As others stated, it was very easy to set up. The Cons that kept it from getting 5 stars. Minor leak along zipper seam on one of the vestibules. In strong wind, some water enters through the side vent even when closed. Like all mostly mesh tents it was a little bit of a mess to set up in the rain. Lastly it was a little too heavy for tough trails (seemed heavier than stated weight) These are minor flaws and I think I pushed this tent beyond it's intended design limits. For less extreme conditions I would highly recommend this tent.
Customer Review: Stood up well in high winds
I spent one night in this tent in my backyard to test it out. It just so happened that we had unusually high winds for us, sustained around 50MPH. When inside the tent I couldn't even tell it was windy other than the sound of the wind. There was no condensation build up in the night, and it's a great size. It was also super easy to set up. My last tent took me at least 40 minutes to set up and turned me off camping a bit. This will definitely motivate me to camp more. Great tent!

Being a state in the western part of the USA, Wyoming is known to be one of the best places to go for vacations, hiking, snowmobiling, hunting, and of course, fishing! A lot of people carefully plan to visit the state and get prepared to indulge in different hobbies whether from simple relaxation to any sport such as game fishing.

Wyoming is blessed with numerous lakes (4,200 beautiful lakes). These lakes are composed of over 300,000 acres or approximately 1,300 square kilometers of bodies of water. In addition to this, the state has an estimated 27,000 miles or approximately 43,000 kilometers of fishable rivers. It has almost 78 species of game and non-game fish.

The walleye is one of the interesting species that most anglers seek. However, it isn't that easy to catch it as its location is an important consideration. You have to be well oriented of the seasons where it is most prominent.

Mostly, the early season is the best time to catch a walleye. It is often told that a lake has to be understood because it has its own characteristics. Most walleye fish prefer little natural lakes rather than moving bodies of river water.

Take note of large sand flats. Most walleye spread out on these areas especially during the month of May. They lie freely on the top of the sand. This is due to their post offspring transition where most male walleye prefer to stay and feed on the site where they've actually spawned.

Considering this shallow sand setting, you have to be specific with your rig. The most chosen rig in this case is the live bait. The particular distance between any weight and your bait is often dictated by water clarity. Clear water lakes require around six to eight feet when we speak of hooks and sinkers. If the water is stained, you will need 30 inches between weights and baits.

As you can spot a group of walleye in the sand (which is mostly the case), try to tip the jig with any small fish. Some prefer minnows. Using a stand up head, let the jig rest on intermittently so that it can trigger bites as you start moving the jig again.

Another attractive spots for Wyoming walleye fishing are lakes with profound vegetation. Emerging weeds are very attractive for these fish. Look up for regions that are hard bottomed as these frequently have good weed flats. But this isn't applicable for early seasons which are considered to be low light periods. Weeds at this particular time of the year aren't well established.

Regine Hehn owns and operates http://www.walleye-fishing-guide.com - Walleye Fishing Guide

Coleman Tent Light

Colman Indoor Tent Light
Magnet Secures Light Without Harming Tent Material
Multi Mountable, Use For Tent, Closet, Shed, Etc
Powerful Xenon Bulb
Easy On/Off Switch
Operates On 4 "AA" Cell Batteries
Customer Review: Like it a lot
I like these lights quite a bit. They have a rubberized push button on/off on the side and the batteries are easy to put in and take out.
Customer Review: Tent light...
The only problem with this order was that it took a little too long to receive.

Although backpacking with children may seem like a lot of effort, the benefits gained from taking them along can far outweigh the hassles. The benefits include not competing with technology for your children's attention, teaching them self-sufficiency skills, and watching them connect with the peacefulness of nature. Here are six tips that allow for a more positive experience when backpacking with children.

1. Involve Them In Packing

Make a list of the items to bring and have your children help collect them. If they are not old enough to read, you can read the items to them. This is important because the more the children are involved in preparations the more they will feel a part of the trip, and the less likely they are to be resistant to backpacking.

2. Get Their Help with Choosing the Trail

Choose a couple of trails and sites that are acceptable to you and then let the children choose from among them. This is another way of involving the children and letting them have a say in where you will be going.

3. Give Them Special Items For Backpacking

Give them something special that is to be used only for backpacking. Children enjoy binoculars, water bottles with fun designs on them, walking sticks, and small waterproof cameras. Another special item that is not only fun, but can be very useful, is their own flashlight.

4. Get Them Excited About Going

Getting children excited can be as simple as talking about backpacking in terms of how fun it is. Another method of eliciting excitement is to go to the library and get books on, and about, backpacking. These may be how-to books, especially illustrated ones, or fiction books with characters that have adventures in the woods.

5. Bring Along Games

While there is a lot to entertain children with while backpacking, it is always a good idea to bring along a game or two. These are useful when it rains, or at night when the children are in the tent, but too restless to sleep. Small, lightweight games specific to backpacking can be found in stores that specialize in outdoor activities. Other options consist of purchasing an extra small deck of playing cards (these are about 1/4 of the size of standard decks), using travel versions of traditional games, or repacking games, such as bring the dice from a Yahtzee game in a zip lock bag with a couple sheets of paper and small pencils or pens.

6. Praise Their Hard Work

It can work wonders when children feel that they are impressing their parents. One easy way to accomplish this is to comment on how hard they are working, both with the hike and with camp chores. First, encourage them to do a good job, and then praise the results.

While backpacking with children can be extra work, the end result is often more than worth it. There is something about nature than can calm even an otherwise hyper kid, and time alone with parents provides the perfect opportunity for long talks and quiet companionship, that may proof elusive when at home where computers, televisions, and phones all make distractions a common occurrence.

So, load up the kids next time, and build a special memory that only backpacking with children can create.

Sarah Holt writes for The Ultralight Backpacking Site. These may include silly putty, finger puppets, a draw-by-numbers book, and a bubble-blowing kit. In addition, there may be toy rings and bracelets, a light-up tiara or crown, a coloring book with crayons, wind-up play cars, and a soft plastic stick-on eyeball.

Toy Laptop Computer - This brightly colored toy looks like a real computer only it does not go online. It has a keyboard, mouse, screen and speakers. Best of all, though, it speaks, has some dandy games and puzzles and it sings songs. This toy can make any 6-year-old a proud computer user.

Balloon Ride - This is simply the best gift ever. There are many companies that offer balloon rides. The balloon is rightly colored and the ride is thrilling.

Indoor Tent - That 6-year-old birthday boy or girl can invite friends over to play in the tent. There are all types of tents but some of the best are in the shape of a big giraffe, a shark, a butterfly, a zebra or some other animal. The floor is nice and soft. This tent means great fun for any 6-year-old.

Baby Doll - This baby doll is just waiting to be loved by a little girl. It has soft, supple skin, it loves to be bathed, and it cries "Mama" when it is put in its bed. It also has eyes that roll and looks content with a pacifier in its mouth. It comes outfitted with sleep clothes. It is waiting to be adopted.

3 Wheel Action Scooter - This indoor scooter is decorated with favorite cartoon characters. It also has a nice roomy basket on the handlebars. It comes in a variety of colors and has a bell to let everyone know it is coming. The wheels are gentle on floors and carpets. You can flatten it out as a bed, sit it up as a chair or drag it around from room to room. It comes with a zipper cover you can remove and wash.

Name Scroll - Six-year-olds love their name and they would be thrilled to see their name and its meaning on a painted scroll. The state boasts of some of the best marine, freshwater environs and semitropical coastal upland locations that provide excellent opportunities to fishing, hiking, camping, boating and wildlife enthusiasts.

Florida's Federal & State parks are blessed with many heritage and cultural legacies. You are sure to feel the closeness with nature while coming in contact with various animal and plant species witnessed at no other place in the world. Such exhilarating experience is made possible by the rich and bio diverse character of Florida's national parks, seashores and forests that make a treat whether you are camping in a normal summer tent or in the properly ventilated 3-season version.

State Parks :
Florida's 723,000 acres of park land spread over 159 parks is effectively administered by the State Division of Recreation and Parks. Most of these parks are great locations for camping in Florida. You can also practice swimming and scuba diving at America's first underwater park named the John Pennekamp Coral Reef, situated on the northern side of Key Largo.

If woods are your calling, you can head southeast of Tampa towards the wooded trails of Alafia River State Park. Swimming or chasing wildlife in southwest of Pensacola (The Pine Flatwoods in the Big Lagoon) or in the Curry Hammock islands in between Long Key and Little Crawl Key, may not be a bad option either.

National Forests :
Camping at the Ocala (Silver Springs), Apalachicola (Tallahassee) or the Osceola (Lake City) National forests can be an experience of the lifetime. These forests span over 1.2 million acre land and feature some of the best slash, loblolly pine, sand and longleaf forests along with few swamps, bogs and savannahs.

Most of these camping locations can be booked on a 1st-come, 1st-serve basis except for a few exceptionally well-developed camping grounds that may need advance reservations. The best way to experience camping in Florida is to head to any of these national forests (except where prohibited) and pitch your tent anywhere you like. The whole experience will leave you touched by nature. However, you must ensure that you avoid camping here while the hunting season is on. More information regarding this can be had online

The Seashores and The National Parks :
The more urban way of camping in Florida is to head for the National parks and the seashores. Camping is allowed in National Park System's 7 units.

Here, you will also be able to gather important information like operating hours, habitat details, recreational facilities, fee and permit instructions. These 7 units are listed as follows:

* Timucuan Preserve at Jacksonville
* Biscayne National Park at Key Biscayne
* Dry Tortugas National Park at Key West
* Big Cypress National Preserve at Ochopee
* Gulf Islands National Seashore at Gulf Breeze
* Canaveral National Seashore at The Titusville
* Everglades National Park in Miami

Camping in Florida provides you with a wide array of experiences. From recreation to wildlife and hiking to habitats, all are within your reach. While the National Park - Everglades being America's widest semitropical wilderness area hosts creatures like Florida Panther, Manatees and American Crocodiles, the adjacently located Big Cypress Preserve is known for camping, wildlife and hiking adventures. If aquatic is the way you like to be, hire a boat or a seaplane for the islands at the National Park - Dry Tortugas to witness some of the best coral reefs.

Gulf Island seashores are favorite destinations for fishing, swimming, boating and snorkeling. Once you've had your fill of these, you can venture into the old coastal forts like the Fort McRee, Fort Barrancas and the Fort Pickens. This visit can be followed up by a space age experience at Kennedy Space Center.

An unexpected shower is a normal thing to happen in this "Sunshine State". Thus, make sure you have everything like bathing suit, sunglasses, swimming fins, masks and sunscreen packed with your camping gear. Most importantly, don't forget your imagination as you will have plenty of opportunities to pack moments into timeless memories!

Abhishek is a Camping freak! Here are a few things to keep in mind:
  Expect the Worst
In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all-purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber, or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity.
  Three- and Four-Season Tents
For summer, early fall, and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three-season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature presealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness.
For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four-season model.
Many one- and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight.

Customer Review: You Get What You Pay For I guess
This tent set up easily and seemed like a good deal at first but our camping night was ruined when it was windy and cold and the zippers broke after only 4 or 5 uses - so we froze! Plus the poles broke and the stakes were cheap and bent easily...making our tent practically blow away in the wind. Overall the materials for this tent were really cheap and I ended up throwing it away after one use. I'd recommend spending more money for a higher quality tent, you get what you pay for I guess.
Customer Review: Not Bad
For such a low price, I couldn't be happier. I used it five times last summer. It was easy to set up and tear down. The size is ideal for two people but could easily accommodate three people that don't mind a little cuddling. It stood up to light rain well (almost no leakage) and withstood heavy rain fairly well (small amount of leakage). I recommend getting a can of the water proofing spray. You will be much happier, and drier. The last trip I took was much more pleasant after the spray.

British Columbia is one of the best camping destinations North America has to offer. That being said, the Whistler corridor from Vancouver to Lillooet is the icing on the cake. This is where we offer our information as to what we found as we camped over the years.

Welcome to the BC camping information site for the Whistler corridor.

First, let's take a look at what we mean as the Whistler corridor.

The corridor stretches from Squamish, less than an hour from Vancouver, through Whistler, Pemberton, Mount Currie, Lillooet, to Lytton and Cache Creek. Arguably the most beautiful 250 km (150 miles) of camping opportunities in the world. Within the corridor you may park a quarter million dollar class A motor home in a gorgeous park like Alice Lake, or pitch a tent next to a glacier at Joffre Lakes. You can take a shower with nice hot water at Birkenhead Park or refresh yourself in the ice cold water of Duffy Lake.

The choices are many and varied. A camping heaven on earth.

There are three private campgrounds in Squamish. Dryden Creek, Eagle Ridge and Paradise Valley. They offer full service hook ups and the rates run from $30. and up.

Riverside RV resort and campground will be found in Whistler.

BC Hydro have three campgrounds in the Lillooet to Gold Bridge corridor. These are free campgrounds and contrary to what you may think, they are very good.

BC Parks have some very nice campgrounds along the corridor. BC camping doesn't get any better.

Alice Lake is a popular place and a very busy one as well. It is located 13km (8 miles) past Squamish on the right.

Nairn Falls Provincial Park is a half hour drive past Whistler on the right. Nice big trees, roomy sites, and with a 20 minute walk to the amazing falls it rates very highly as one of the best areas to camp.

Birkenhead Provincial Park is located 17 km (10.5 miles) West of D'Arcy off Highway 99. On a scenic lake.

The Province also provide a great many lesser sites that are not maintained as pure campgrounds. A few of these are along the highway 99 Whistler corridor. At the end of Duffy Lake you will see a few picnic tables and an outdoor toilet.

Campsite at Duffy Lake

There are about 5 sites here. Further along towards Lillooet you will find a few more. These are called BC forestry sites. Most are free. If you like the sound of rushing water to lull you to sleep, this is it. Coyooshe Creek is very fast flowing as the water bounds along through the ever narrowing valley.

After a very scenic, twisting drive through very interesting mountains, you arrive at Lillooet. Watch for the BC Hydro campground sign on your right. If you are able to find a site it's yours free. Maximum stay is 14 nights. Water and pit toilets are supplied and the caretakers keep the place very clean. There is even fire wood free for the taking.

Two more Hydro campgrounds are located at Carpenter Lake on the road to Gold Bridge.

Skihist Provincial Campground is not exactly in the corridor but offers the best BC Camping along the number 5 highway between Cache Creek and Hope. If you turn left onto the number 5 highway at Lytton and drive just a few minutes you will see it on the right. This campground has a host, good washrooms, dumping station, big lots and a nice location for an evening stroll across the highway and a fantastic view of the Fraser river and the trains that negotiate the curves and tunnels of the CPR main line.

Joe and Irma have built a wonderful fact filled site http://www.whistler-outdoors.com with well over 100 pages of information a visitor really must know prior to visiting.

Wenzel Piñon Sport 7-by 7-Foot Three-Person Dome Tent

The 7' x 7' Pinon sport dome tent has 49 sq. ft. & sleeps 3. On Saturday my husband and I camped out in the backyard ( with our beagle in between us :) ). It was very easy to set up like the other reviewers have stated. Great quality for the price. We didn't have any trouble with the zippers... though I was extra careful with them as other reviewers seemed to have trouble with them. First time 'camping' experience with this tent was a good one!

This book is chock full of camping secrets that will make any campout a success. We have used their Baja Camping book twice to camp in the Baja and they give excellent advice and great reviews of the campgrounds.
Customer Review: Mexican Camping
I've been searching on the internet for information on RV (Trailer Parks in Mexico) Resorts in Mexico and it hasn't been very useful. This book however is exactly what I was searching for on the internet but MUCH, MUCH handyer.

If you are going out on an extensive backpacking trip, then you will have to carefully consider your food provisions. Food and water are essential aspects of staying energized on a backpacking trip, so understanding the best ways to prepare and pack food can really help you plan a good menu.

Weight is always a concern with backpacking food, since you'll be carrying everything on your back. You should try to bring food that is lightweight, durable, and easy to cook out in the wild.

Some backpackers like to cook elaborate meals with fresh ingredients, particularly on short trips, while others carry the gear and take the time to catch fish or hunt small game for food. However, especially for long expeditions, most backpackers' food criteria are more or less the same: high energy content (particularly protein), with long shelf life, and low mass and volume.

Ordinary household foods brought on backpacking trips include cheese, bread, sausage, fruit, peanut butter, and pasta. Popular foods for snacks include trail mix, easily prepared at home; convenient and nutritious energy bars; and chocolate and other forms of candy, which provide quick energy and flavor. Traditional outdoor food includes dried foods like jerky or pemmican, and also products like oatmeal (which can also be consumed raw in emergency situations).

Another common variety of special backpacking food is freeze-dried food, which can be quickly reconstituted by adding hot water. One kind of special food is Meal Ready-to-Eat (MRE), which originated from the United States military. They make excellent food for several reasons; they do not need to be rehydrated nor heated or cooked in any manner. They are very durably packaged. A single MRE contains a full meal, complete with snack and desert, and they offer a great deal of variety in each meal.

To make certain water is safe to drink you should filter it and add a water treatment to it. Iodine tablets are popular because they are easy to use, but they can result in the water having a weird taste. A solution to the taste problem is to add sugar free drink mix to the water. If you need to filter water due to debris it has in it, you can use cheesecloth. You could use a clean bandanna for a makeshift filter.

You should always consider the nature of the trip when you choose your backpacking food. Hot meals are much more important in cold climates, for example. Food and water are your main energy source, and if you are not eating right and getting plenty to drink, it can have a severe negative effect on your backpacking adventures.

Visit us for more information on backpacking food ideas, top backpacking places and zipoff hiking pants.

Coleman WeatherMaster Six to Seven-Person Cabin Tent

Exclusive WeatherTec(TM) System Keeps you dry -- Guaranteed. 12 x 9 feet, 1 room, sleeps 6-7. 88" of vertical space at center. 2 doors. I also wanted a tent that was easy to set up. I am not disappointed at all and would buy the same tent again. It takes around 20-30 minutes to set up and very easy step by step instructions. The Coleman has a very good warranty. Amazon offers at the best price because I spent alot of time on computer comparing prices.
Customer Review: coleman cabin tent - excellent
Did quite a bit of searching for the perfect family camping tent. Finally decided on this one because of the straight walls and nice height. The tent more than meets my expectations. Although it is much easier if two people set up the tent, it is actually easier to set up than many dome tents. Warning: you must use the tie downs on the end to keep the angled poles from collapsing to the center. Very high side wraps keep ground water out (in Florida that's a must). The only problem I have is that the carry strap on the bag pulled out on the second lift. You'll likely have to rig a carry strap, however, this tent is for "car camping" which means you wouldn't want to carry it far anyway. My recommendation: get one and enjoy the good life!

We have all seen great lists of camping essentials, but in our opinion there are five items you absolutely should not do without.

Your camping trip sometimes may end up being a total write-off for the simplest reason. That's because we don't get to do it very often. The average camper may get to spend 15 or 20 days per year sleeping out in the great outdoors. Judging by the many accessories in today's RV's, roughing it may not mean the same as it did years ago.

As a couple who have had a great many nights under the stars we have compiled a short list of five items we would not leave home without. Your list may differ from ours but that's human nature.

Our five most important camping items.

A large tarpaulin with plenty of rope. We camped on the west coast of British Columbia, as well as many years on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. In these two areas it rains plenty. On the east coast we simply put up with the rain. On those days we put up with it or went home. The ground would get wet. Everyone was bored while trapped inside the tent. Not until we camped in British Columbia did we learn what to do. Our first spring weekend trip took us to a beautiful BC Provincial park. The couple next door to our site had a huge tarpaulin set up and lashed to the trees. Two extension poles raised the center up high. It covered the entire site. It rained that night. Next morning they had a campfire going and ate breakfast under the tarp. Their site was perfectly dry. Definite high on our list of camping essentials.

An axe, a hatchet and a small bucksaw. Very important tools. You purchase a bundle of firewood. It's either too large to burn, or too small and burns quickly. You may need to find a dead tree, a piece of driftwood or a large chunk someone else had and couldn't cut up. The axe will split large pieces. The hatchet cuts the larger pieces down to size. The saw can be used to salvage long pieces. My saw was a Sandvik saw with a 12 inch blade. It had very sharp large teeth that cut through small logs easily. It never dulled.

Fire sticks and fire paste. Both are very effective but one or the other will do. Excellent camping essentials. If you want to be able to start a campfire every single time, these products will do the job. We have never had a failure. They are very inexpensive. A package of 12 sticks will last the entire summer. Prepare the fire with tiers of kindling and a few pieces of larger wood. Cut a one inch piece of fire stick. Slip it under the kindling and light it. It will burn until the fire is blazing.

Propane camp stove with an eight pound tank. Two or three burner. Both are excellent. We wore out two, white gas stoves over the years. The kind you pump up to use. The fuel is simply called Camp-stove fuel. They were a bother. They could be dangerous. The propane stove is much superior product. We suggest the eight pound tank as it is very cheap to fill at the local service station, will last hundreds of hours, and is easy on the landfill. Carry a one pound canister just in case you run out with the eight pound tank.

Last but not least. Check your equipment. One year we opened up our large tent during our first trip of the year only to discover the entire upper corner had been torn up and used as nesting material by squirrels during the winter. That trip was ruined. Check your stove, gas container, lamps, flashlights, tents and RV's. Leave nothing unchecked and you will enjoy a great camping season with your camping essentials.

Joe and Irma have built a wonderful fact filled site http://www.whistler-outdoors.com with well over 100 pages of information a visitor really must know prior to visiting.
